EFFICIENCY MEETS EMPATHY: Why AI is the Ultimate Tool for the Human-Centric Funeral Director
A funeral director recently asked me: “Curtis, all this AI stuff sounds cool, but aren’t we losing the human touch that makes our profession what it is?” I love this question. It’s the elephant in the room right now. Every time you turn on the news, there’s another story about how Artificial Intelligence is going to replace human workers, handle our conversations, and take over our lives. ;) It’s only natural that people in deathcare are feeling some anxiety about it.
Here’s my view: True innovation doesn’t replace the hu man touch. It removes the friction so the human touch can be enhanced.
I’m around AI every day. At my company, we have in troduced several AI tools into funeral service, but we aren’t doing that to turn funeral homes into cold, automated robots. We build these tools because time is valuable, and we want our partners to spend less of it staring at computer screens.
I don’t believe that AI is a threat to modern funeral direc tors. Rather, it has the potential to solve some of the biggest problems in front of us. The staffing shortages we’re seeing in funeral homes are making it critical to improve operational efficiencies. The overwhelming number of administrative tasks that pull you away from the families is also driving away the younger generation from entering the profession.
WHERE AI CREATES TIME
1. CONTENT CREATION: THE OBVIOUS ONE, OBITUARY DRAFTING
This was the first area we saw AI enter the profession, and it’s already become a staple at many funeral homes. I put obituary drafting rather than writing, because it is best used to get that first version out the door for the family to improve. Aside from obits, many funeral homes are using chat agents to help them write marketing content, website content, and help plan their content schedules.
The Takeaway: AI handles the blank-page syndrome, giving you a strong first draft in seconds so you can focus on the nuances of a life well-lived.
2. INSTANT IMAGE EDITING
There is serious time savings here! When my grandfather passed away over 10 years ago, I spent a lot of time editing images. Specifically, the main portrait photo we were going to use on everything. Like many families, we didn’t have a re cent quality portrait of him, so we used an image of him with my grandma and had to remove her from the image to isolate him. That meant Photoshopping her out and redrawing his shoulder and clothing to try and make it look natural.
That process is now only a few seconds! Just type “remove the wife,” and AI will do the rest. The possibilities are near ly endless. Photo restoration, upscaling an image for print, adding a smile, animating an image (Harry Potter style), swapping outfits, changing backgrounds, the list goes on, and the time that can be saved is significant. I must also mention that this improves the memorial service with better imagery.
The Takeaway: Hours of tedious Photoshop work are reduced to seconds, instantly giving families beautiful, high-quality visuals.
3. GUESTBOOK MODERATION
AI moderation is such a natural application. It removes the workload almost entirely. As we all know, sometimes people like to share their frustrations about a person even after their passing. This is something we don’t want to expose the fam ily to. AI does a great job moderating content and catching anything that shouldn’t make its way online. This is true of photos as well. Rather than having an admin review all of the entries and filter out any spammers, AI can do that and only surface things that need human involvement.
The Takeaway: AI acts as a shield, automatically fil tering spam and negativity so your staff doesn’t have to manually police online memorials.
4. NOTETAKING & TRANSCRIPTION
Rather than frantically taking notes of every little detail, try using an AI notetaker. This allows you to be more present in the arrangement and will capture things you may have otherwise missed. There are several consumer options for this that will record, transcribe, and summarize a meeting. There are also fu neral-specific tools that can record the arrangement conference, transcribe, summarize, provide personalization ideas, create task lists, and pre-draft an obituary. These are game-changers.
The Takeaway: Allow AI to be your co-pilot during the arrangement conference. Automatically enhance the notes you’re taking, get personalization ideas, tasks, and a first-draft of an obit.
SECURITY, PRIVACY, AND CONSENT
It’s totally valid to worry about where your data goes. When you hear about AI in the news, you may be hearing about public tools. If you type a family’s private stories into a free, public chatbot, that data can be stored and used to train future models. That is a privacy risk, and it violates the trust we have with our families.
But there is a difference between public AI and enter prise-grade AI designed for businesses.
When you partner with a reputable tech provider in the funeral space, their AI tools are built inside a secure, closed loop. In a secure enterprise environment:
• Your data is encrypted.
• The AI processes the information to give you your draft or summary, but is not stored by the AI model.
• Your data is never used to train the public model.
AI ACKNOWLEDGMENT WITH THE FAMILY
The best way to handle AI use is to be completely open about it. These days, people just expect businesses to use AI.. You won’t need a massive, scary legal contract. Instead, weave a simple AI and Data Privacy Acknowledgment into your standard intake or arrangement paperwork.
When presenting it to the family, frame it as a commit ment to help provide a better experience and give them your undivided attention. You might say:
“To make sure I am completely focused on you and your family right now—rather than staring at my notepad or computer screen—we use a secure digital assistant to help summarize our conversation and draft the initial obituary.”
By having them sign a brief, clear consent line in your contract, you achieve three things at once: you legally protect your firm, you respect the family’s privacy, and you demonstrate that technology is being used to maximize your ability to serve them.
CONSIDER HOW AI CAN IMPROVE YOUR FAMILY INTERACTIONS
Ultimately, AI isn’t here to change how we care for those who are grieving. It can help us with the background noise. Every minute AI spends formatting a photo, filtering a guest book, or summarizing an arrangement meeting is a minute given back to you to do what a machine can not do: offer a comforting presence, listen, and guide a family through their darkest moments.
By embracing efficiency, we’re improving the family’s ex perience and can provide a more meaningful funeral.
